The Soul of Fort Worth Black History Tours shine a light on the legacy, resilience, and cultural richness of Fort Worth’s African American communities. From the historic Stop Six and Southside to the soulful sounds of Lake Como, each tour stop uncovers stories that shaped Texas and the nation. Each tour is community-rooted and storytelling-centered. Led by local historians and cultural educators, these journeys celebrate the vibrant neighborhoods that gave the world Opal Lee, T-Bone Walker, and the sounds of the Chitlin’ Circuit.

Our tours are rooted in the history of Freedmen Towns like Cowanville, Terrell Heights, Mosier Valley, and the Garden of Eden. Our curated experiences connect visitors with powerful landmarks, churches built by formerly enslaved people, Black-owned hotels that hosted jazz legends, and fraternal orders where leaders like “Gooseneck Bill” McDonald organized for economic justice.

Founder/CEO

What's going on y'all! My name is Mason Thompson, and I’m the founder of Soul of Fort Worth: Black History Tours. I’m a graduate of Tyler Junior College and Huston-Tillotson University. I was born in Denton and raised in Fort Worth; everything I do is rooted in my love for Black history, education, and community empowerment.

My passion for storytelling and historical preservation has led me to do work that centers the lived experiences and contributions of African Americans in Texas. I’ve worked with Black Austin Tours, where I guided tours that highlighted the hidden histories of Austin. I also held a fellowship with the Lillas Benson Digital Scholarship Project at the University of Texas at Austin, where I helped digitize and interpret African Diaspora archives. I'm a proud member of the Ankh Maat Wedjau Honor Society through the National Council for Black Studies, which honors academic excellence in the field of Africana Studies. I am also a member of the Tarrant County Black Historical & Genealogical Society, Inc.

I created Soul of Fort Worth because I saw a need to tell the full story of this city, the neighborhoods, churches, clubs, and people that built Fort Worth from the ground up. These walking tours are my way of honoring the past while educating the present, and I’m excited to share this history with anyone willing to walk with me.
